Why We Founded the IWSA
The International Wudang Sanfeng Association (IWDSFA) was founded at a pivotal moment in Wudang’s history.
For generations, these teachings were preserved within the mountains—transmitted directly from teacher to disciple through rigorous training, lived experience, and personal transformation. The integrity of the lineage was safeguarded not through institutions or mass dissemination, but through embodied practice and close transmission.
Today that condition is changing.

The practices of Wudang and the Sanfeng Lineage continue to spread beyond China and into a global context, they are increasingly subject to reinterpretation, dilution, and fragmentation. What was once held together through lineage-based transmission now risks becoming scattered—detached from its roots, principles, and internal coherence.
At the behest of 14th-generation master Zhong Yunlong and 15th-generation master Yuan Xiugang, the Association was established by its three 16th-generation founders to help ensure that as the lineage expands, its core remains intact. Stewarding the tradition into its unpredictable future. This is not an effort to control or restrict the natural growth of the lineage, but rather to maintain it with integrity. Without a clear thread of transmission, the deeper dimensions of the practice—its martial and internal alchemy practices, its ritual technologies, its philosophical framework—are easily lost or misunderstood. The central purpose of the IWDSFA is to maintain that thread as it is woven into the fabric of the contemporary world.
We are devoted to preserving the integrity of the lineage—supporting accurate transmission, fostering serious practice and scholarship, and providing a point of continuity between the mountain source and the global community now engaging with these teachings.
The IWDSFA exists to help ensure that what is being carried forward remains recognizably part of the same living tradition—rooted, coherent, and whole.
